Sarah Raymond Fitzwilliam was born and raised in Kendall County, IL. She attended Illinois State Normal University and began teaching in the Bloomington, IL public school system (what is now District 87) in 1868. Fitzwilliam went on to become the nation’s first ever female school superintendent. The Sarah E. Raymond School of Early Education, located in Bloomington, was named in her honor.
