On January 21, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the first case in the United States, in Washington state, of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, more commonly known as COVID-19. On March 11, 2020, WHO declared it to be a global pandemic, and on March 13 President Trump declared it a national emergency, thereby unlocking billions of dollars in federal funding to fight the disease.
In March, the Trump administration announced a series of travel bans, and state governors began issuing stay-at-home orders. Immediately on March 25 and 27, respectively, Congress passed and the President signed the CARES Act, the largest economic recovery package in history.
