The Bloomington Education Association was organized in June 1967 with nearly half of District 87’s 400 teachers joining at its onset. The organization purposes were declared to be to “encourage finest possible education experiences for the students in the public schools” and “to work cooperatively with the administration and board of education in the solution of school problems.” The group intended to “secure and maintain” adequate salaries, tenure, retirement, etc. for teachers and act as liaison between local teachers and the Illinois Education Assn and the National Education Assn.
