Fifer School was originally known as Brick School and was constructed in 1855. Brick School was destroyed in the “11-11-11” windstorm of November 11, 1911, and a new school was built. The school was renamed for former Governor Joseph “Private Joe” Fifer, as he had lived in the rural neighborhood as a boy. Fifer School closed in 1940.
