For more than a century, the Town of Normal was home to a state-run orphanage: the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School (ISSCS). In the early 1960s, the resident population generally hovered between 250 to 300 children, both boys and girls. Seen here are ISSCS youngsters Joan Hazard and Herb Steele amid 39 Thanksgiving turkeys—some 700 pounds in all—being readied for Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1962.
