Photo of the Week, 8: Ike Sanders "Up, Up and Away"

Ike Sanders

This week's photo comes from the Museum's Bloomington-Normal Black History Project Collection. This “gag shot," circa 1904, shows two African-American men “floating" over downtown Bloomington. We're almost certain that's Ike Sanders (1878-1929) on the left. To learn more on Sanders, visit his biography page.

“Gag shots" are still popular. At the Illinois State Fair, for example, one can dress in Wild West attire and pose for a “Wanted Dead or Alive" poster. Do you have any such photos in your family photo albums?
