This photograph, undated, shows George Stewart, a local (and well-decorated) World War I veteran. The “163” on his American Legion cap and jacket lapels references the Redd-Williams American Legion Post #163, comprised of African Americans. Though hard to believe, at one time Bloomington had separate Legion posts for black and white veterans. Steward headed Post #163 for a time.
