Delmar Haxel, born in Bloomington in 1920, worked for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad for thirty eight years. He served as supervisor of the Glenn Yards in the Chicago area.
His father, William “Red” Haxel (1887-1970), worked fifty three years in the Bloomington Yards, retiring in 1956. Starting as a roundhouse laborer, Red soon became a fireman and then an engineer who operated freight engines in the yards.
This collection includes a variety of railroad related materials such as locomotive manuals, operating department rules, wage schedules, railroad company publications, labor agreements, constitution of the American Railway Supervisors Association, and more. These were collected by both William and Delmar Haxel during their long careers.
