State Farm Building

The State Farm Building in downtown Bloomington, the tallest building in the downtown area, has long been a local landmark. Designed in 1928 by the architectural firm of Lundeen, Hooten, Roozen and Schaeffer, the 8-story building was constructed in the depression years 1929-1931, a fine example of the Art Deco style. The successor firm of Schaeffer and Hooten designed additions in 1934, 1936 and 1946. The continued expansion of State Farm led to the bulk of the State Farm workforce being moved to new buildings constructed on the east side of Bloomington leaving only the Fire Insurance Division in the original building. In 2018 this last State Farm division was transferred out of downtown Bloomington leaving the building vacant, and in 2019 State Farm announced plans to demolish the building.
