McLean County Museum of History

{ "name":"A View of the Top: Inside the Museum Dome tour", "description":"

One of the Museum’s most sought-after experiences is finally being made available to the public. For the first time ever, visitors will have the opportunity to climb to the top of the Museum’s iconic dome.

Join Candace Summers, Senior Director of Education, on Tuesday, September 15 at 5:30 p.m. for this unforgettable behind-the-scenes experience. As participants ascend nearly 150 feet and climb 169 stairs into the dome of the fourth McLean County Courthouse, they will enjoy breathtaking views—and a fascinating journey through the building’s history.

Along the way, attendees will enjoy an architectural tour inside the building, learning about the disastrous downtown Bloomington fire that claimed the previous courthouse; the innovative materials and technology incorporated into the building's construction — chosen both to safeguard public records and to convey a sense of permanence, elegance, and durability; and the remarkable story of how this historic building survived the wrecking ball not once, but twice, before becoming home to the Museum of History.

The tour is limited to 20 people and tickets will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are $50 for the general public and $45 for members of the Museum, and includes the guided tour and commemorative certificate.

Important Information: the climb into the dome involves a series of steep, narrow, curved, and spiral stairs and one landing. There are no rest areas, seats, or restroom facilities within the dome. For safety reasons, individuals with heart, back, neck, knee, or breathing conditions, and acrophobia (fear of heights), are advised not to participate. Because of the nature of this tour, walking devices such as canes or walkers are not allowed on the tour. It is also not recommended for children under 13 or for women who are pregnant to participate because of the physical demands of the tour.

Tickets go on sale Monday, August 10 and will be available for purchase online at mchistory.org. Questions? or for more information, please contact the Education Department at 309-827-0428 or education@mchistory.org
