Collection Description

In 1967 with the near completion of Interstate 74 and Interstate 55, Bloomington, Illinois had concerns about increased traffic volume. This combined with repeated drowning occurrences at Lake Bloomington and various airport accidents, gave rise to a team of volunteers which sought to provide McLean County with a quick response squad. Working in tandem with local authorities and emergency services, the McLean County Emergency Squad would provide support in a plethora of ways, responding to each unique situation with prompt professionalism. Within its first six years of service the Emergency Squad had made over 200 confirmed emergency runs, donating over 2,285 man hours to training and aforementioned runs.
