Rescued Homing Pigeon August 1942

July 30th, 2016

Elmer Lyons, Bloomington Police Department patrolman, holds a wounded homing pigeon from Fall River, Massachusetts that was rescued by two local women and brought to the station. Some bad egg had clipped the poor bird’s wings. The police cared for the pigeon at city hall for a few days before crating him (or her) up for a flightless return journey to owner Anton Mello. The serial number on the pigeon’s leg band led authorities to Mr. Mello in Massachusetts—some 1,100 miles to the east!
