YWCA Sexual Assault Awareness Month Clothesline Project

The McLean County Museum of History is honored to once again partner with YWCA’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month for the 2023 Clothesline Project display. The Clothesline Project, which started in 1990, is a vehicle for survivors of sexual assault to express their unique story by drawing, writing, or painting on a T-shirt. The shirts are then displayed on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to their survival and serve as a visual display of violence statistics that advocates has said have been ignored. This project is seen as a healing tool, as well as an educational tool, giving survivors an outlet for expression and charging the community with confronting the prevalence of sexual assault.

The project has been done nationally and internationally and continues to grow. Anyone interested in creating a T-shirt for the Clothesline Project can contact Stepping Stones at 309-662-0461 to get started. To reach Stepping Stones' 24-hour helpline and connect with a sexual assault advocate, call 309-556-7000.

The shirts will be on display in the Museum’s Rotunda during regular hours (9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday).
