pt.fwd presents Jeremy Young

The Museum is please to host another sound artist as part of pt.fwd's fifth season! Jeremy Young is a maker of electroacoustic audio from Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. On Sunday, March 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the Museum's first floor rotunda, Young will perform music that makes use of sine and square wave oscillator system, analog tape loops, and sound treatments from amplified surfaces and objects. This concert is free and open to the public. Space is limited to 50 people and is on a first come, first serve basis.

Young is a member of the Montreal-based experimental poetry sound unit Cloud Circuit, alongside writer Deanna Radford, and the electroacoustic modern classical trio Sontag Shogun, with pianist Ian Temple and sound sculptor Jesse Perlstein. He has performed across Canada, the US, UK, Asia, and Europe. Making unique use of a sine and square wave oscillator system, analog 1/4" tape loops, captured and filtered radio and EMF signal, and foley-inspired sound treatments from amplified surfaces and objects, Young's improvisational and compositional techniques are influenced by Cagean aleatoricism as well as haptics-based praxis and deep listening. His McLuhan-esque approach lies in combining the physical treatment of audio signal (piezo mic'd objects and surfaces, manipulations of tape and tone via texture and voltage) with complex musical content, to create sonic narratives that are anchored by the media on which they are recorded, edited, and/or played back; an underlying principle of musique concrète.His début solo LP, Amaro, was released in May 2021 on Thirsty Leaves Music, and features contributions from multidisciplinary artists Vito Ricci, Ida Toninato, Markus Floats, Pauline Kim Harris, Johannes Bergmark, Deanna Radford, Dolphin Midwives, and filmmaker Tomonari Nishikawa. Recent full-length recordings include August Tape Sketches (2022, Meakusma), Filaments: Wave Sketches for Éliane Radigue (2020, Eliane Tapes/Moving Furniture), Dizzy, Congested Musick (2018, Neologist Productions), The Poetics of Time-Space (2017, Silken Tofu) and Total Fiction with Shinya Sugimoto & Julia Kent (2017, The Phinery). In 2022, Young was invited by the TAKKK Kunstikeskus environmental art center to begin work on a multi-year sonic artwork to be installed in-situ in 2023-24. In 2020, Young's sound art work was selected to appear in Francisco López's kaleidoscopic audio exhibition, "AUDIOSFERA: Sound Experimentation 1980-2020," at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain. Also in 2020, Young and Radford were invited to contribute a multimedia work of sound, text and visual art to Berlin’s Occulto Magazine's Issue 7. The resulting work, entitled "Static studies: four ersatz phrases in dactylic hexameter for sea (s) and cloud (c)," which concerns the unmachinization and organic artificiality of static, was later reconstructed as an improvised sonic performance shot and published as part of Montreal's Live In Concrete series. In 2016, Young was commissioned by the Musée d'ethnographie de Genève to compose a full-length work of sound based on their massive ethnomusicological sound archives, called The Poetics of Time-Space. In 2014, he was awarded a Media Artists' Assistance Grant by Wave Farm (NYSCA) to create 125 unique cassette loop pieces and commissioning sound artists to create new work using them as source material.

pt.fwd is an independent, artist-run 501c3 non-profit that organizes contemporary music and sonic arts performances in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. pt.fwd's mission is to celebrate the communal experience of coming together to listen to powerful new sonic art. In partnership with the McLean County Museum of History, pt.fwd promotes new work by local and regional artists in a historic, acoustically curious setting.
