From the Cornfields to the Coal and Copper Mines

On Tuesday, February 28, the Museum is pleased to host Dr. Ericka WIlls, assistant professor at the School for Workers, University of Wisconsin, Madison, for a presentation sharing stories from workers she engages with and highlight her work with women as a labor rights activist and educator. This free, public program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum's second floor courtroom, and is sponsored by Not In Our Town Bloomington-Normal and the Bloomington-Normal Trades and Labor Assembly.

Dr. Ericka Wills was born in rural McLean County, and received a BA in English and Environmental Studies from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and PhD in English Studies from Illinois State University. From a local working-class family, Dr. Wills was intrigued with workers' stories. Since graduating she has worked in labor union education, activism, and research. In southwestern copper mines, she does cross-border work, connecting Mexican miners with their U.S. counterparts. In southern Appalachian coal, she supports striking miners and their families. She studies and encourages women's roles in sustaining struggles in these male-dominated occupations. Dr. Wills now teaches at the University of Wisconsin's School for Workers, leading educational efforts for rank-and-file workers.
