Historical Sketch

Brokaw Hospital opened in 1896 as the “Deaconess Hospital” with the support of five local doctors. It was placed between the two towns of Bloomington and Normal, which soon grew around it. Abram Brokaw, a local businessman, made a large donation to the hospital in 1901, which led the hospital’s staff to rename it “Brokaw Hospital” in honor of Abram and his family. Brokaw Hospital, as with other hospitals of the day, was known for often treating needy patients for free or for lower costs. Brokaw Hospital also created a school of nursing, the Brokaw Hospital School for Nurses, in January of 1902. It was integrated into Illinois Wesleyan University in the early 1960’s.

In 1919, Mennonite church leaders from around the area decided to begin their own hospital in Bloomington called the Mennonite Sanitarium. It later became known as the Mennonite Hospital. Along with the Mennonite Hospital, the Mennonite School of Nursing was created to train nurses to work at the hospital. In 1999, the Mennonite School of Nursing was folded into Illinois State University.

Both hospitals experienced considerable growth, and both were compelled to add on to their buildings and to hire larger numbers of doctors and nurses. In 1984, Brokaw and Mennonite Hospitals combined with Eureka Hospital to create BroMenn Health Care and BroMenn Medical Center. The Medical Center is located on the former Brokaw Hospital site.
