Photo of the Week, 92: Thanksgiving in the Great Depression, 1938

November 20th, 2014

On the evening of Wednesday, November 23, 1938, the day before Thanksgiving, the Young Men's Commercial Club of Bloomington prepared gift baskets for local needy families.

Seen here at the YMCA gymnasium (then located at the southeast corner of East and Washington streets) are several nattily dressed members of this business and professional club: M.K. Walker (front left), Howard Hamlow (front right), and (left to right in rear) Paul McNab, Charles Arnold, and Ed Berry.

Established in 1916, the Young Men's Club (the "Commercial" in its name was shed long ago) is nearly a century old and today meets every Tuesday at the Ozark House restaurant in Bloomington.
