Title: Director of Volunteers and Interns

 

The McLean County Museum of History, located in the Old County Courthouse in historic downtown Bloomington, IL, is one of America's premier county historical museums accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Museum is currently seeking a full-time Director of Volunteers and Interns to work with all departments to cultivate and secure volunteer support for a growing organization. The successful candidate would ideally begin working no later than June 1, 2017. Salary range is $30,000-40,000 depending on experience. This full-time position is supported by a part-time assistant.

 

The ideal candidate should

  • Be an organized self-starter with ability to strategize new outreach and recruitment efforts
  • Identify areas of need or new opportunities and develop a plan for growth
  • Enjoy building personal relationships with volunteers and community partners who are passionate about local history, education, and/or library resources
  • Be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • Have excellent organizational, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • Work effectively with a team of staff, volunteers, and the Museum Board of Directors
  • Connect with diverse ages and backgrounds of potential volunteers
  • Communicate effectively using multiple platforms

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate staff requests for volunteers and interns and develop job descriptions
  • Screen all volunteer and intern applicants through applications, interviews, reference checks, and background checks
  • Schedules all volunteers and monitor volunteer, intern, staff, and visitor satisfaction
  • Evaluate volunteer performance and develop and maintain volunteer incentive programs
  • Create and maintain program materials, including policies and procedures, applications, volunteer and intern agreements
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct orientation, training, and focus groups
  • Available for occasional weekend/evening activities
  • Event planning for annual Volunteer Appreciation Week, Cemetery Walk, etc.
  • Outdoor work and light lifting are required for Cemetery Walk held in early October
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in a Humanities related field from an accredited college or university (museum studies, history, management, marketing, human resources, literature, etc.)
  • Minimum of 4 years experience in customer service and/or volunteer coordination. Work experience in a museum setting preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of volunteer software and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
